Hypovolemic shock- Gigi

Meet our featured patient for today!

🐶 Our little sweet Gigi, a 10-year-old poodle who was rushed to our Emergency Department due to collapse.

Gigi was presented to be on hypovolemic shock, a life-threatening condition caused by his severe bloody diarrhea 💩🩸 from impaction of sand in the intestines.

He also had hyponatremia (low blood sodium levels), dehydration, and a combination of metabolic and respiratory acidosis.

👩‍⚕️🚨 Our ER vet along with nursing care team provided emergency stabilization for dropping blood pressure by providing fluid bolus therapy for resuscitation and support, ECG monitoring and oxygen supplementation. An emergency administration of dextrose was also provided to address his very low sugar level.

Once stabilized, Gigi was moved to the ICU. The treatment plan comprised rehydration and correcting electrolyte imbalance, continuous nursing care👩‍⚕️, and providing early enteral nutrition – a therapy that is essential for critically ill patients. At HVSEH, we provide enteral nutrition using specialized nasogastric tubes and specifically tailored to nutritional needs.

After a few days of hospitalization, the whole team is very happy to send Gigi home 🏡 as he managed to eliminate the sand from his gut and went back to his happy and cuddly self! 🐶😄

We are so proud of our brave Gigi and grateful to his family for trusting us at HVSEH!
