Gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV) or bloat in dogs, is a life-threatening condition. It happens when the stomach abnormally twists and its outflows are blocked, food and gas are trapped inside the stomach and results in further expansion of the stomach like a balloon. This results in blood vessels being compressed and blood flow reduction to heart and other organs, compression on chest and affected lung capacity, and it is also very pain full for the dog. Without proper treatments, animal can deteriorate quickly and die within a few hours.
When the dog has GDV, it is restlessness in the beginning. As its progress gets worse, its breathing rate and effort increase, with drooling. It may also try to vomit but nothing is brought up. Its belly becomes bigger and bigger and painful when being touched.
If you notice any of these signs or are concerned about GDV, seek vet advice and care as soon as possible.
